Where There's Smoke, There's A Sewer

Tests will be conducted to identify breaks in sewer system

During the week of April 2, the City of Durham will conduct a "smoke test" near East Campus to identify breaks or defects in the sewer system.

The test involves using an air blower to force smoke vapor into the sewer system. Smoke will escape from the system at any point where there is a break in the line, according to a notice from the city. Inspection crews will be present during the test.

Jack Burgess, assistant director of maintenance services in Duke's Facilities Management, said that the city's sewer system runs along the perimeter of East Campus along Buchanan Street and  Markham Avenue  but that access to or around campus should not be affected as a result of the test.

"People may see smoke escaping from places like storms drains and manholes or from the ground, streambeds or other areas," Burgess said. "The smoke may have a slight odor, but it is non-toxic and non-staining."

Anyone with questions or who would like to report smoke should call (919) 542-5002 or (919) 560-4344.
