Deadline Extended for Nominations for Algernon Sydney Sullivan Faculty & Staff Award

Nominations due by March 16 for faculty member or staff; Nominations for graduating seniors are closed

The nomination period for the prestigious Algernon Sydney Sullivan award for staff, faculty member or graduate/professional student has been extended until March 16.

The award is presented annually in April to a Duke graduating senior and to a Duke faculty member, staff or graduate/professional student in May.  The graduating senior award deadline has already passed and no more nominations are being accepted.

The New York
Southern Society established the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Awards in 1925 in
memory of Mr. Sullivan, a southerner who became a prominent lawyer, businessman
and philanthropist in New York in the late 19th century. The award seeks to perpetuate the
excellence of character and humanitarian service of Sullivan by recognizing and
honoring in others such qualities as:

  • Recognition of
    Selflessness
  • Generosity of Service
  • Nobility of Character
  • Person of Integrity
  • Depth of Spirituality

To recommend a member of the Duke community for either category,
please submit a letter of nomination in which you describe and evaluate your
candidate's "characteristics of heart, mind, and conduct as evidence of a
spirit of love and helpfulness to other men and women."  Give specific
examples of how this individual's actions have directly affected the lives of
others.

The nomination form is available through the Provost's website.
