Five Fabulous Free Things To Do At Duke

Attend a re-enactment of readings by Charles Dickens, learn beer-brewing or shop for free

This week's picks for free things to do at Duke from the Working@Duke staff include shopping (or donating) at the student-run Free Store, a performance of the public readings of Charles Dickens and a chance to learn the basics of brewing beer.

11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday, Feb. 6

Duke's Free Store allows Duke students, staff and faculty to donate or acquire any gently used office supplies, books, classroom supplies, kitchen supplies or other miscellaneous items. Bring something or take something - it's all free. The Free Store will be at a table on the West Campus Plaza or in the Bryan Center depending on the weather. 

12 p.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 8

The Learn IT @ Lunch series continues with a presentation on "Capture & Collaborate: Using Digital Media Tools To Enhance Teaching, Learning and the business of Duke" by the Office of Information Technology's Interactive Technology Services. Bring your own lunch. Room 218, Perkins Library

7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 8

In celebration of Charles Dickens' 200th birthday this month, come listen to The Public Readings of Charles Dickens, as Performed by Michael Malone. Malone, a professor of the practice of theater studies, will recreate Dickens' dramatic public readings of his works, impersonating characters from famous scenes in "Oliver Twist," "Nicholas Nickleby," and other novels. The performance will take place in the Perkins Library Biddle Rare Book Room. A reception with refreshments will be held after the performance.

12 p.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 9

As the general election revs up, media channels are filled with opinion polls and predictions by pundits. Tune in to a live Online Office Hours on the Pitfalls of Predicting Elections with Duke political science professor Sunshine Hillygus. Learn beer-brewing basics in a workshop hosted by Duke Campus Farm and Students for Sustainable Living. The workshop will be held at the Smith Warehouse Kitchen, Bay 6, Room 265. RSVP required
