One of the large stone towers marking the entrance to East Campus Union Drive off of Buchanan Boulevard was knocked down early New Year's Day in a one-car wreck involving a SUV.

According to neighbors, the incident occurred shortly after 1 a.m.  One neighbor said he heard the collison and came out to find a SUV flipped and the front end smashed.  The tower is part of Duke's 95-year-old East Campus wall.

The driver did not appear to be injured, according to a statement in the Durham Herald-Sun.  As of Monday morning, police had not made public an incident report.
