Durham, NC - As part of an effort to promote sustainable commuting to, from and around campus, Parking and Transportation Services  will award two tickets to a Duke men's basketball game to a randomly selected student, faculty or staff member who participates in an alternative commute.

The lucky winner must be registered with Parking and Transportation as a WeCar member or own a GoPass, a pass that allows Duke community members to ride for free on some area buses. About 6,000 students, faculty and staff are currently eligible for the drawing.

The pair of tickets is in upper level seating at the Jan. 19 home game against ACC rival Wake Forest University . The winner of the drawing will be announced Jan. 12. Students, faculty and staff who are already WeCar members or own a GoPass will be automatically entered into the drawing.

"In addition to saving money on fuel and permit fees, we want to provide new incentives to Duke students and employees that choose not to drive by themselves each day," said Brian Williams, Duke's transportation demand coordinator. "This giveaway is meant to highlight the people that help the environment by lowering Duke's carbon footprint every day."

Last month, Parking and Transportation held its first drawing for the 1,300 Duke community members registered as carpool, vanpool or bicycle commuters. Yanqiang Yang, a senior research associate in the Division of Cardiology, was randomly selected and received two tickets to the Dec. 30 men's basketball game against Western Michigan University .

Yang, who has carpooled with a coworker from Chapel Hill to West Campus since last spring, said he also occasionally uses his GoPass on Triangle Transit buses to get to work.

"I encourage people to carpool or vanpool to save money for on gas, reduce wear on a vehicle, cut emissions for our environment, reduce traffic, and save parking spaces on campus," Yang said. "It was really great to see the men's team play in-person for the first time."
