Humanities Project Seeking Emerging Networks Proposals

The Humanities Writ Large Initiative is Developing New, Collaborative Ventures

Duke's Humanities Writ Large initiative is seeking new proposals for its Emerging Humanities Networks program. These emerging networks -- a series of collaborative courses, workshops and seminars -- would be the second such round of ventures intended to spur and support creativity across disciplines. Officials anticipate 3 to 5 awards for fall, most in the $10,000 to $30,000 range. Humanities Writ Large, a five-year, $6 million initiative funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, aims to change the role of the humanities in undergraduate education. It has already funded six new emerging networks projects under development now. They include an arts and markets study; a humanities on demand course in which students will help shape the syllabus; a series of literature and medicine workshops; a series of history workshops focused on teaching; a working group examining live performance and media; and a seminar in which Duke students will join students from three German universities to curate an exhibit at the Nasher Museum of Art.
