Duke first-year students were introduced to the Durham Performing Arts Center, the city's showcase cultural performance space, during the "Duke Listens" program Thursday night.  Pictured, students started the evening in the DPAC lobby to hear a concert from the Pitchforks, Duke's male a cappela singing group.  Following the Pitchforks performance, students moved into the main auditorium to hear a performance from Duke jazz professor John Brown and his quintet.

Prior to the performances, the students ate dinner at a picnic at the American Tobacco Complex adjacent to DPAC.

Several orientation activities this week were designed to introduce the new students to Durham and the many cultural offerings in the area. On Saturday, students will participate in "Duke, Durham and Beyond," a program to teach them about the city through faculty outings and service projects at various locations.
