A Bedeviling Piece Of History

A Duke Today reader made a suggestion to highlight an old piece of Cameron Indoor

Located in a hallway in the Washington Duke Inn, this floor piece hangs just outside the hotel's golf shop as a remnant of the original flooring from Cameron Indoor Stadium. Completed in 1940, this piece was part of the building's $400,000 construction cost, which would be about $6.4 million today.

This piece was removed with other sections of the Cameron Indoor court in 1977  after a concert by the Grateful Dead. Other pieces were thrown away as scrap, but this piece featuring the Blue Devil was refinished and hung in the Washington Duke as a piece of Duke history.
