'Men In The Kitchen' Recipe Winners Announced
Durham, NC - Eric Lipp believes that anyone can love cabbage, brussels sprouts, cauliflower or broccoli - at least the way he prepares them on a grill with olive oil, garlic, paprika, mustard, pepper and a pinch of sea salt.
His recipe was one of the winning entries in the "Men in the Kitchen...Or at the Grill" contest at the Duke Farmers Market on June 17.
"My brother says he doesn't like brussel sprouts, but the first time I prepared the recipe for him, he ate about three pounds," said Lipp, a clinical research coordinator at Duke's Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center.
The recipe contest, held in honor of Father's Day by LIVE FOR LIFE, Duke's employee wellness program, invited fathers (or other men) who are Duke staff or faculty to submit a recipe for their favorite creation. A fruit or vegetable had to be a main ingredient. Prizes for the best recipes (links to PDFs below) included fresh produce baskets or $10 coupons for goods at the Duke Farmers Market. In addition to Lipp, other winners were Bryan Clark, Gary Lehew, William Falls and David McDonald.
McDonald has special bragging rights. His recipe will be prepared by Chef Ryan Sides from Bon Appetit at this Friday's farmers market.
"He liked the Broccoli Rabe Pesto Sauce and is going to make it in the blender and then add it to a pasta salad with fresh vegetables from the market," said Diana Monroe, coordinator for Duke Farmers Market and health education specialist for LIVE FOR LIFE.
Falls, who submitted his mother's favorite squash casserole recipe, plans to attend Friday's market to taste the pesto and buy more vegetables.
"I hadn't ever cooked the recipe until this year when I started going to the farmers market," said Falls, a staff specialist in the School of Nursing. "Now I'm eating a whole lot more vegetables, and I cook this recipe at least once a week."

I'd definitely like to try the Grilled Squash Quesadilla. Thanks for posting these!
Thanks for your comment and suggestion! We've added the winning recipes at the end of the story. Which one (s) will you fix?
I'm going to try the Grilled Cabbage and Oven Fried Okra. I'm swimming in the raw ingredients for both thanks to the weekly CSA box that I pick up from my farmer at Duke Gardens!
Nice story! Would it be possible for you to publish the winning recipes?
