Enroll in Duke-sponsored Summer Camps

Discounts available on some camps for children of Duke faculty and staff

Summer camps used to be a luxury, but with more and more families with all adults in the workforce, finding summer camps or other childcare has become a necessity for many.Kristin Anderson, the associate director of foundation relations at Duke, has learned that it is never too early to look for summer camps for her 7-year-old daughter, Emma."Summer camps are great for allowing her to follow her interests, but it can be quite frustrating because a number of camps fill up so fast," Anderson said.To help parents searching for summer camps, Duke Human Resources has compiled a list of Duke-sponsored camps for 2011. The camps include multi-week academically-focused summer sessions run by the Duke University Talent Identification Program (TIP), day and residential week-long camps for soccer, diving, swimming, lacrosse and other sports, and nature camps for children as young as 6 hosted by the Sarah P. Duke Gardens.Children of Duke employees receive a discount of $75 for most athletic camps and $50 or $100 for arts and academic camps. Employees enrolled in the Dependent Care Reimbursement Account can use the tax-free money in the account to pay for summer day camps, but not for residential (sleepover) camps.Anderson appreciates Duke's efforts as she strings together 10 weeks of activities for her daughter."I didn't even know about the Duke Gardens camps, which Emma would love," she said. Unfortunately, for Emma, the camp for her age group happens while the family will be on vacation. "But it is nice to see what next year might hold," she said.
