Summer Reading Selections Narrowed to Six

Duke's Summer Reading Selection Committee, working collaboratively this year with The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has narrowed the field of finalists to six choices, and is now seeking community feedback on which book should be selected.

The book chosen this year will be the summer reading selection for incoming first-year students at both universities, and there are plans for joint discussions.

The six finalists are:

-- Eating Animals, by Jonathan Safran Foer;

-- The Dew Breaker, by Edwidge Danticat;

-- The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, by Rebecca Skloot;

-- Losing My Cool, by Thomas Chatterton Williams;

-- The Sea, by John Banville; and

-- Shop Class as Soulcraft by Matthew B. Crawford

People who wish to share their thoughts about any of the books are asked to keep in mind some of the our selection criteria, including whether it prompts stimulating debate and lively discussion; resonates with incoming students; stimulates deep thought and personal transformation, and enriches the intellectual life of students
