Ingrid Daubechies Wins AMS Award

Mathematician honored for research on signal processing

Ingrid Daubechies has received the 2011 Leroy P. Steele Prize from the American Mathematical Society (AMS) for her seminal contribution to research. Daubechies is recognized for her 1988 paper on the first examples of families of wavelets. These mathematical algorithms enhance signal processing and have been integrated into computer software, most notably for the compression of digital images. Daubechies received her award and $5,000 at the January 2011 AMS meeting in New Orleans.
