Duke in Pictures: Hazmats and the Winter Forum.

Students registering for program on pandemics

Duke student Colin Baker wears a hazmat suit as he distributes information about Pandemic2011, the Winter Forum for Duke students that will be held in January 2011.

Hosted by the Duke Global Health Institute, the Winter Forum will engage students in a variety of talks and activities meant to provide a deep understanding of the mechanism of pandemic diseases and the methods used to contain and prevent them. Anne Schuchat, M.D., director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, will give the keynote address.

The forum was launched as an annual project last year designed to involve students in two and a half days of in-depth and interdisciplinary discussion on a topic of wide interest and importance.

Student-athletes whose extracurricular interests are often restricted by training schedules and students whose major coursework may limit their ability to study abroad are especially encouraged to apply, as are international students and first-time Winter Forum participants. Deadline for applications is Sept. 17. To apply, click here.

Baker promoted the Winter Forum at the annual Student Activities Fair held on East Campus this past Friday.
