Durham, NC - Katherine Franz, a Duke assistant professor of chemistry, is one of 14 faculty in the United States to be named Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholars for 2009.

The award includes a $75,000 unrestricted grant to support her research program. Recipients are young faculty in the chemical sciences within the first five years of their academic careers who have created an independent body of outstanding scholarship and demonstrated a commitment to education.

Franz's research area uses chemical tools to manipulate metal-catalyzed oxidative stress in biological systems.

The award is considered the flagship program of the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation of New York, established in 1946 by chemist, inventor and businessman Camille Dreyfus in honor of his brother Henry to advance the chemical sciences.
