A Duke faculty member and a Duke program are getting attention in the foreign press this month. Both art historian Richard Powell and the DukeEngage program in Colombia are subjects of major articles.

Powell, John Spencer Bassett Professor of art history, is quoted at length in the July 2008 issue of the Italian Vogue. The issue is dedicated to black fashion models, Powell is interviewed in an article about the legendary African-American fashion model Donyale Luna (1945-1979).

The article also includes excerpts from Powell's forthcoming book Cutting a Figure: Fashioning Black Portraiture from the University of Chicago Press, which will be published in November.

The DukeEngage program was mentioned in two Colombian newspapers, El Colombiano and El Mundo. Students in the program are promoting educational opportunities for young Colombians. Students are working with local partners Comfama and Comfenalco and an organization called Parques Bibliotecas to help give community workshops teaching others various skills and work on the Historical Memory Project, which will help communities not traditionally represented in official histories record their own historical record.

In addition, the students have also been interviewed by Colombian television for a news story.

The project is supported by The Duke Endowment and the the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
