Coke's Diversity Story

Company leader's talk will open Duke lecture series on diversity

Coca-Cola's diversity success story, which saw the company move from a large litigation settlement to a Top 5 ranking on a list of "To 50 Companies for Diversity" will be the subject of the first talk in this season's Diversity Leaders' Speaker Series.

Steve Bucherati, chief diversity officer for Coca-Cola, will speak at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, in the Doris Duke Center in Duke Gardens. He will speak on "It's the Real Thing -- Diversity, Inclusion & Fairness: The Coca-Cola Story."

The series is sponsored by the Duke Office for Institutional Equity.

"The transformation at Coke provides clear lessons and strategies for how an organization -- university or health system -- can move beyond the mere counting of individuals, to full engagement and development of employees at all levels," said Benjamin Reese, Duke's vice president for institutional equity.

"The Coke Story provides a road map for how the full engagement of people at all levels of an organization can foster a true culture of inclusion and diversity.

"Coke is perhaps the best example in our nation of a company that has made significant progress on the journey to full integration of workplace practices of equity and fairness," Reese added.
