Primetime Meeting on Security Tonight

Open town hall will be held in Schiciano Auditorium

Top Duke University officials will be joined by Durham Police Chief Jose Lopez, Sr. for a special "Primetime" town hall meeting on safety and security issues both on and off-campus at 7:30 p.m. tonight (Wednesday) in Schiciano Auditorium in the Fitzpatrick CIEMAS Building.

Duke Associate Vice President for Safety and Security Aaron Graves, Vice President for Student Affairs Larry Moneta and Lopez will speak at the event and answer questions from the audience. Other Duke officials from the Graduate School, International House and Transportation Services also will be available to answer questions.

The town hall follows the recent murder of Pratt School of Engineering graduate student Abhijit Mahato in his off-campus apartment and recent armed robberies of two Duke students and a staff member near campus.

Graves will discuss security changes implemented this weekend, including increased patrols off-campus and the hiring of additional security officials for on-campus patrols. Lopez will discuss the city's response to the incidents, as well as to more than 30 robberies against Hispanics in the city since Jan. 1.

The meeting will be held in Schiciano to facilitate attendance by the Pratt student body and other graduate students in particular. Overflow seating will be available outside the auditorium in the Fitzpatrick lobby, where attendees can watch the proceedings on plasma screens.

The event also will be streamed live on the web at this address. (Quicktime will be required. A free download is available here.) Parking will be available in Parking Garage IV, adjacent to the Bryan Center.
