Psychiatry, Pharmacology Professor Everett Hews Ellinwood Jr. Dies

Taught at Duke for more than 42 years

Dr. Everett Hews Ellinwood Jr., 73, a former professor of psychiatry and pharmacology at Duke, died Saturday, January 5, 2008, at his home in Durham. He was born in Wilmington, and was the elder son of Dr. Everett Hews Ellinwood Sr. and Hulda Holloman Ellinwood.

After graduating from Greensboro Senior High School, he attended the University ofNorth Carolina at Chapel Hill where he earned his undergraduate and medical degrees. After his residence in psychiatry, he served in the U.S. Public Health Service in Lexington, Ky., as Chief of Addiction Service for members and family of the military and while earning the rank of major. After receiving an honorable discharge, he subsequently relocated to Durham, and began his career at the Duke University Medical Center.

Dr. Ellinwood was the director of Behavioral Neuropharmacology at Duke University Medical Center he served more than 42 years as Professor of Psychiatry and Pharmacology and was awarded one of the first Training Grants from the National Institute of Drug Abuse. Over the years, this grant has provided basis for additional grants and continued research and has trained many distinguished investigators and well-known scientists, some of whom are now Chairmen of Psychiatry Departments at various institutes.

Dr. Ellinwood was an internationally recognized scientist in addiction research and published more than 300 papers. He served as president of the George Ham Society and president of the Society of Biological Psychiatry. He was on the editorial board of numerous psychiatric journals including the Journal of Biological Psychiatry.

Throughout his life, Dr. Ellinwood epitomized the words of his state motto: "To Be Rather Than To Seem." Albeit his education was in our public institutions, he was vociferous in his cheers for Duke once he became ensconced there. His steadfast loyalty earned him scores of devoted relationships among friends and colleagues. He loved beauty of the Arts and was very creative.

Surviving are his children, Everett Hews Ellinwood III, of Virginia; his daughter, Susan and her husband, Bill Francis, of South Carolina, Bradley Ellinwood and his wife, Angela, of Atlanta, and his long-term friend and devoted companion, Cackie Joyner. He is also survived by his brother, George Ellinwood, of Raleigh; and his sister, Elizabeth Ellinwood Craig, of Smithfield.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 8, 2008, at Duke University Chapel. The Rev. Cary J. Melvin will officiate. Interment will follow at Maplewood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the W.J. Kenneth Rockwell, MD Research Endowment Fund for the Investigation of Eating Disorders.
