Find this Gargoyle, Win a Free Lunch at the Faculty Commons

For Duke Today's first contest of the academic year, we're asking you to head out on campus to the gargoyle below. There's a lot of history behind the many Duke gargoyles. (An early Alumni Register describes "A wise old owl, perched high over a dormer window, looks below with serious mien; the grotesque figure of Archimedes, astride a nearby gable, assumes a superior attitude to his motley company of strange, silent stone folk.") This campus online map takes visitors to some of the stranger ones.

What we're interested is some of the hard-to-find gargoyles on campus. Throughout the semester, we'll post an occasional photo of one; if you can identify its location, send the answer to Duke Today or call 681-4514.

We'll collect the winners, and on Monday, Oct. 1, we'll draw one person to have lunch for two at the Faculty Commons. Members of the Duke Office of News and Communications and the University Photography staff are not eligible. If you have any questions, call 681-4514.
