Conference on Student Privacy Rights

Faculty, staff and students invited to Oct. 1 event

The Offices of Student Affairs, Registrar and the University Counsel will hold a workshop entitled: "FERPA: Translating Privacy into Practice." This half-day event will be held Monday, Oct. 1, in the Bryan Center on West Campus. It is free and open to Duke University faculty, staff, and students. The purpose of this event is to raise awareness of the limits and options regarding student privacy as governed by the Family Educational Rights and Protection Act (FERPA).

Steven J. McDonald, General Counsel at Rhode Island School of Design and editor of NACUA's The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act: A Legal Compendium, will open at 9 am with a plenary session. The participants will then break into small groups to discuss specific case studies around relevant themes (e.g. Parent notification, record keeping, waiver options and more). The participants will regroup for a closing session and break before noon.
