Duke University is planning several events to mark the sixth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Six Duke alumni died during the attacks: Michael Morgan Taylor '81, Frederick C. Rimmele III, M.D. '94, A. Todd Rancke '81, Christopher Todd Pitman '93, Peter Ortale '87, and J. Robinson "Rob" Lenoir '84.

  • At 4:50 p.m., Duke's Army ROTC color guard, under the supervision of Cadet Alexander Salloum, will present a flag ceremony at the West Campus flag pole outside of the Allen Building to pay tribute to the attack victims. At the end of the ceremony, the flag and a memorial case engraved with the names of the Duke alumni victims will be presented to Duke officials.
  • The flag ceremony will be followed at 5 p.m. by a recital on the Duke Chapel chimes by Sam Hammond, university carilloneur.
  • During the day, the Duke Conservative Union plans to place American flags in front of the chapel to honor each of the victims of the attack.
  • During the morning, Alumni Affairs officials will place a wreath at the grove of six trees commemorating the six alumni killed. (Click here for the Alumni Affairs memorial page.)
