Duke to Acquire Metrosport Facility

Fitness club to be turned into new home for Duke Diet and Fitness Center

Duke University Health System has agreed to acquire the Metrosport Athletic Club at 501 Douglas St. in Durham and turn it into the new home of the Duke Diet & Fitness Center. The club will permanently close to its membership on Aug. 26.

A memo sent out this week by Paul Newman, vice president VP for ambulatory care and executive director of the Duke Private Diagnostic Clinics, the health system plans to begin major renovations to the facility this fall to provide for the expansion of the Duke Diet & Fitness Center, currently housed in a smaller location at 804 West Trinity Ave. The renovations are expected to be completed by mid-summer 2008.

"This is an opportune time for Duke's internationally renowned residential weight loss program to expand its programs and services, especially after the recent success of its newly published book, The Duke Diet, and the launching of its online program," the memo said. "The renovated Metrosport Athletic Club facility will allow the Duke Diet & Fitness Center not only to continue to grow and thrive, but its closer proximity to Duke University Hospital and the Duke Center for Living campus also will optimize its ease of use for patients."

The memo also stated that to ease the transition for Metrosport Athletic Club members, the Duke Health and Fitness Center is providing a number of options to all them.
