Duke Dining Serves Up More Than a Meal

Dining Additions Aim to Enhance Campus Experience

This summer, Duke's Dining Services cooked up a few new features to help enhance dining and the campus experience by offering students, faculty and staff more opportunities to build community and engage with each other.

Among the changes include expanded hours and service by Sage & Swift at "Upstairs @ The Commons" (formerly known as the Faculty Commons) located on the second level of the West Union Building. Beginning September 1, the venue will offer brunch every Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition, the Commons will be expanding its hours Sunday through Thursday to offer a social hour at 4:30 p.m. (wine and beer available) with a la carte dinner service from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Dining Services, in collaboration with Students Affairs, is also expanding the Armadillo Grill in the Bryan Center to include an outdoor patio that seats 100 under a free-floating canopy. The patio offers space for members of the Duke community and visitors to enjoy a Tex-Mex meal or specialty beer, and watch sporting events on a 9-by 12-foot projection TV and a 60-inch flat screen.

This summer, Bon Appetit, recognized nationally for its focus on fresh ingredients and organic and locally harvested products, expanded its service from the Marketplace on East Campus and the Freeman Center for Jewish Life to West Campus. Bon Appetit will now manage food services for the Great Hall, Subway and Chick-fil-A.

Other Duke Dining additions this year include:

  • An a la carte dinner from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sundays in the Refectory Café in the Divinity School.

  • Breakfast from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday through Thursday in Tommy's in McClendon Tower.
