Two Added to University Counsel Staff

Duke's Office of University Counsel has added two new attorneys to its staff.

Henry L. Cuthbert joined Duke as associate university counsel on May 1. Cuthbert was recruited to Duke from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he served as senior university legal counsel and was responsible for addressing issues relating to Internet law, copyright, computer privacy, distance education and international activities, among other things. His role at Duke will involve these same primary areas of emphasis.

Cuthbert received his undergraduate degree from Lawrence University in 1975, and his law degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Law in 1983. He currently serves as president of the National Association of College and University Attorneys, the country's leading bar association for lawyers who practice in the higher education arena.

Leighton P. Roper III joined Duke as assistant university counsel on March 26. Leighton has spent the past seven years as a health care attorney with Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice PLLC, where he served as counsel to hospitals and other health care organizations. He also has extensive political experience, drawn from nearly 15 years of work in various state governments and political campaigns. At Duke, Leighton will focus on providing compliance, regulatory and transactional advice to Duke University Health System.

Leighton graduated from the University of Virginia in 1990 and from the Duke School of Law in 1999. He was recently elected secretary of the North Carolina Bar Association's Health Law Council, and is an active member of various other state and national associations of health care attorneys.
