Road Work Planned for Erwin Road

Repaving, bike lanes to be added soon

Expect to see roadwork being done to Erwin Road shortly. The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) will be resurfacing and making a few enhancements intended to improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety.

At the intersections on LaSalle, Research, Fulton, Trent and Anderson St's. high visibility "zebra" crosswalks and a 10' inner lane for bikes will be added. The four lane section east of Anderson will be restriped to a three lane and provide striped bike lanes.

Mike Kneis, the division project manager, said the resurfacing is a part of routine maintenance, and that the work schedule was designed to minimize traffic problems.

"There will be no detours or problems from the roadwork because the contractor has peak hour restrictions stating when work can and can't be done," Kneis said.

Assistant resident engineer of the NCDOT Cadmus Capeheart said the work will begin in about two weeks.

"The patching crew will probably be onsite in early August and the paving crew in mid to late August," Capeheart said.

According to Capeheart the contractor cannot restrict the travel lanes between 7 and 8 a.m. and between 4 and 6 p.m. Monday thru Friday.

Kneis said that the road work should not cause any problems for bikers or drivers as long as people are paying attention.
