Smell Smoke on Campus? It's From Georgia

The noticeable smell of smoke around Duke's campus today comes from a faraway source: wildfires along the Georgia-Florida coast, according to the National Weather Service.

The service issued a weather hazard alert for the Triangle stating that "strong southwesterly winds of 35 to 40 mph just off the surface will spread a smoke plume across portions of central North Carolina through noon today. The smoke plume originates from wildfires in parts of southeast Georgia and northern Florida."

The service said 35-40 mph winds were carrying the smoke plume north.

In the aftermath of the smoke, many people across the Carolinas were calling 911. Emergency officials urged residents not to call 911 to report fires unless they actually saw smoke or flames from a fire.

More than 390 square miles have been burned in the fire. For more about the Georgia fire, click here.
