Duke Announces Winners of University Scholarships

Thirteen high school graduates from 10 states and three foreign countries have been named winners of prestigious University Scholarships at Duke University.

The University Scholars Program was created in 1998 with a gift from Duke alumna Melinda French Gates and her husband Bill Gates, through the William H. Gates Foundation. The program is designed to stimulate an interdisciplinary, intergenerational community of scholars who share an excitement for original research, collaborative thinking and innovative scholarship.

Scholarships cover full tuition for four years and one summer of research and travel. Based on estimated tuition rates, this scholarship is worth more than $130,000 to a student enrolled for four years.

The new University Scholars are:

-- Anthony V. Alberti of New Providence, N.J., a graduate of New Providence High School and the son of Suzanne Scaturro and Vito Alberti.

-- Ian C. Ballard of Foxborough, Mass., a graduate of Foxborough High School and the son of Elizabeth Connors and Jeffrey Ballard.

-- Anna Mary Brown of Englewood, Colo., a graduate of Cherry Creek High School in Greenwood Village, Colo., and the daughter of Jan and Allan Brown.

-- Ga-Young Joung of Louisville, Ky., a graduate of Dupont Manual High School and the daughter of Bo-Kyung and Hyun-Gon Joung.

-- Manoj Kannusamy of Oldsmar, Fla., a graduate of East Lake High School in Tarpon Springs, Fla., and the son of Umarani and Sekar Kannusamy.

-- Griggoriy I. Kerzhner of Mayfield Heights, Ohio, a graduate of University School in Hunting Valley, Ohio, and the son of Sofya and Ilya Kerzhner.

-- Chantel Katharina Liggett of Riverdale, Ill., a graduate of Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy in Aurora, Ill., and the daughter of Birgit and Darren Liggett.

-- Pam Liu of Chapel Hill, N.C., a graduate of the N.C. School of Science and Math in Durham, N.C., and the daughter of Gexin Du and Yujun Liu.

-- Nicola Rose McEldowney of Kennebunk, Maine, a home-schooled graduate and the daughter of Margaret and Brooke McEldowney.

-- Linda Zhou of Merrick, N.Y., a graduate of W.C. Mepham High School in Bellmore, N.Y., and the daughter of Xueqing and Gusheng Zhou.

The three international winners are Erxin Lu of Shanghai, China; Mohammad H. Memon of Mont Albert North, Australia; and Alexandra Oprea of Ploiesti, Romania.
