Durham, NC - Jazz played in the background, students were in semi-formal attaire, alumni showed up and everyone had fun. That was the purpose of "The Party!" an event held Friday at Duke Libraries on West Campus. A joint venture of the library and Duke Plays, a student organization that seeks to redefine and reclaim campus culture, The Party! attracted President Richard H. and Cindy Brodhead, Roy and Merilee Bostock, Karl von der Heyden and hundreds of students and other members of the Duke community.

The Party! featured desserts, coffee/tea, cash bar for wine/beer, entertainment from Katharine Whalen of the Squirrel Nut Zippers and Duke's own Pulsar Triyo. Alcohol was served to students 21 years old and older.

Duke Plays, a group organized by students Rachel Weeks and Haley Hoffman, has sponsored several social activities designed as creative, inspirational celebrations of Duke's traditions of "play." The event was supported by 34 different campus organizations and included a 50-foot long photographic exhibit of Duke's social history put together with the assistance of the University Archives.
