Duke Student Seriously Injured in Campus Bicycle Accident

A Duke University graduate student was seriously injured Tuesday afternoon when his bicycle collided with a dump truck on Science Drive.

No charges were filed in the accident, which was investigated by Durham police.

The student, David McIvor, underwent surgery Tuesday night at Duke Hospital and was in fair condition Wednesday morning.

The collision occurred at 12:38 p.m. when a northbound dump truck driven by Stephen Bryant of JRS Trucking in Timberlake tried to turn right from Science Drive on to Whitford Drive, according to a news release from the Durham Police Department.

As the dump truck turned, McIvor, who was traveling northbound on Science Drive, rode up on truck's right side and tried to pass it, Durham police said. The truck and the bicycle then collided.

Durham police investigators said witnesses reported that the dump truck had slowed to about 5 mph and had its right turn signal on. A construction crew member in the area also motioned for the truck driver to turn, according to Durham police. The truck driver was not injured.
