Statement on Campus Culture Initiative

The following statement is by Robert Thompson, chair of the Campus Culture Initiative, and co-chair Larry Moneta

The Campus Culture Initiative was charged by President Brodhead to undertake a rigorous self-examination of the undergraduate experience at Duke. Our goal has been to evaluate and suggest improvements in the ways Duke educates undergraduates in the values of personal responsibility, consideration for others and mutual respect in the face of difference and disagreement. We have just concluded the preliminary portion of our work, which included a good deal of data gathering and meetings with different groups on campus. We met before Thanksgiving with President Brodhead and the Presidential Council and reviewed with them orally what we have learned and the kinds of issues we think we will need to address. We have committed to honor President Brodhead's request for our written recommendations in the spring.

We have been tasked to address a specific set of issues and have organized ourselves to do so. With data gathering largely behind us, we are entering the phase of our work of interpreting what we have heard and learned and formulating a limited number of recommendations. When we provide our written report to President Brodhead this spring, the results of our work will become public.
