Media Advisory: Coverage of 2006 Move-In and Orientation Week at Duke
Duke is limiting media access to campus from Aug. 22-28
In an effort to permit students and their families to move onto campus and settle into college life without undue intrusions, Duke University is limiting media access to campus from Aug. 22-28.
Events that will be open to the media are:
-- Move-in Day for First-Year Students: 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 22, East Campus (Bassett and Alspaugh residence halls).
-- New Student Convocation: 11 a.m. to 12 noon, Wednesday, Aug. 23, West Campus (Page Auditorium), with a keynote speech by President Richard H. Brodhead.
-- A Night on the Town: 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 24: dinner and music downtown and a Durham Bulls game for first-year students.
-- Into the City: begins 10 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 26, at Baldwin Auditorium, East Campus; includes a welcome by Durham leaders, tours of the Durham community led by Duke faculty and staff, and service projects throughout the city.
All other Orientation Week events are closed to the media. Specific requests for additional access must be made to Duke's Office of News and Communications at (919) 684-2823 and will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Tuesday, Aug. 22: Move In
Media coverage of students moving onto the Duke campus will be restricted to a two-hour period on Aug. 22.
This time period is reserved for the arrival of first-year students on East Campus. These students will be arriving in scheduled shifts, based on their housing assignment, and will include students moving into Alspaugh and Bassett halls.
-- From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., a designated interview and viewing area will be set up on East Campus near Alspaugh and Bassett halls.
-- The interview/viewing area will provide access to students and their families moving into Bassett and Alspaugh (which are located on the main quadrangle of East Campus near Baldwin Auditorium). Reporters may request to interview families and students only as they pass by this area. On-campus access to other students moving into other residence halls on this or any other day is prohibited.
-- Access to the interior of any residence halls by any members of the media is always prohibited.
-- Parking for TV satellite trucks and other members of the media will be restricted to the Baldwin Auditorium parking lot. The lot is accessible from Markham Avenue, near the intersection with Onslow Avenue. Space is extremely limited and permission to enter will not be granted without a reservation. Contact the Dean of Students Office by 3 p.m. Monday at (919) 684-3511 to reserve a space.
Wednesday, Aug. 23: New Student Convocation
The new student convocation, which will include a keynote address by Duke President Richard H. Brodhead, will be held in the Duke University Chapel at 11 a.m. The event is expected to last about one hour.
Following the convocation, students will be invited to pledge their commitment to the university's Community Standard during a signing event on the lawn in front of the chapel.
-- Entry to the Chapel is limited to participants. Reporters may watch the proceedings online or at the overflow presentation in Page Auditorium (there will be special seating in the balcony for media).
-- There will be an interview/viewing area designated near the James B. Duke statue in front of Duke Chapel for TV camera crews and newspaper photographers.
-- Video of the service will be streamed live on the Duke Chapel web site. Video overflow will be in Page Auditorium.
-- All members of the media, including still and video photographers, will be required to remain either in Page Auditorium or the interview/viewing area unless escorted by a member of Duke's Office of News & Communications.
-- Reporters may request to speak with students and parents only as they pass by this area; they may not seek interviews elsewhere on the campus.
-- Parking for TV satellite trucks and other members of the media will be limited to the Bryan Center parking deck. The parking deck is accessible from Science Drive.
