NCCU-Duke NITE at Durham Bulls Highlights New Collaborations

Faculty, staff and students from Durham's two universities will come together at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Wednesday, Aug. 30

Faculty, staff and students from Durham's two universities will come together for NCCU-Duke NITE at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Wednesday, Aug. 30, at 7 p.m.

"We're looking forward to spending an evening at the ballpark with our friends from NCCU," said Duke University President Richard H. Brodhead. "We're neighbors as well as colleagues, and recently we've taken several steps to strengthen the ties between us."

Brodhead and James H. Ammons, the chancellor of North Carolina Central University (NCCU), will throw out the first pitch at the game. NCCU's band will play the national anthem.

"I think it will be a great opportunity for our students, faculty and staff to socialize with our counterparts at Duke," Ammons said. "I'm looking forward to the event."

The event highlights a growing number of collaborations between the two universities. In October, the student governments from Duke and NCCU will hold a Unity Day in conjunction with the North Carolina Human Relations Commission.

Ammons and Brodhead have provided support for several other initiatives now being developed. Duke's Center for Documentary Studies will offer a course that enrolls both Duke and NCCU students and focuses on documenting Durham history. The course builds on a reciprocal relationship that allows undergraduates from one school to take one class a year at the other.

In addition, the Duke in Ghana summer study-abroad program will offer three scholarships a year to NCCU students. Also, the women's centers at the respective campuses are collaborating, as are members of the two student affairs staffs.

Tickets for the game between the Bulls and the Columbus Clippers are available by calling Tim Seaton of the Bulls ticket office at (919) 687-6510. Callers from both universities should ask for tickets in the NCCU-Duke NITE reserved section.
